The Coat hanger is a reference to the time before the Roe v Wade abortion law, where abortions were illegal and preformed with various sharp objects, which often meant infections and death to the women.

Unsafe and illegal abortions still take place, both in developed and underdeveloped countries. In the USA the main reason for unsafe abortions is the price of abortions. Abortions are not governmentally funded and therefore the poorest communities are not able to afford abortions. Furthermore, women in the American military do not have access to safe abortion, it is simply not allowed in military hospitals.
Several organizations have adapted the coat hanger as a symbol of illegal and unsafe abortions. Women are wearing them and it has given name to a movie. The Coat Hanger Projects is a documentary, which unfolds the story of illegal and unsafe abortion, which still takes place today. A trailer can be seen on the right side.
Woman on Waves have under the name Diesel for Women launched a campaign as the fashion giant's name, as a reaction on Diesel's decision to distribute free abortion pills to all their female workers.
